Manager, IT Services & Support

Most administrative and staff positions in organizations (e.g. IT, finance, human Resources, legal, etc.) provide a variety of technical expert services to business leaders and their operations in support of the core business. These services are most effectively provided in a consultative capacity. Yet, while staff have the subject matter expertise of their respective discipline, most do not have the consulting skills required to ensure effective transfer and use of their expertise.

This action learning two-day workshop combined with a half day follow up learning session provides staff with the specific knowledge and skills required to optimize the delivery of their expertise and ensure their expertise is used by their business clients. The second day of the workshop is usually scheduled a week apart from the first session to provide participants some opportunities to try out and practice new skills acquired through structured learning assignments. During the period of time between the workshop and the follow up session, participants apply the learnings and practice the skills acquired to their "real time" work. Then during the follow up session their application experiences are examined, specific issues encountered explored and problem-solved leading to the development of more effective actions and solutions.

While this workshop can be customized to meet specific learning needs identified, common content includes the following;

  • Defining the "value-added" of the services provided by each staff role to its respective client organizations.
  • Exploring the nature of the consulting relationship and the range of roles consultants commonly play.
  • Learning the "Client-centered" Consulting Model that outlines the different consulting phases and their key success factors including how to meet client needs during each phase, the desired outcomes for each phase, and the key client related issues to manage during each phase
  • Relationship building skills including how to build client trust, collaboration, and commitment
  • Influence and persuasion skills
  • Effective meeting leadership skills & basic group facilitation techniques
  • Organization change management skills
  • Negotiation skills: How to create win-win agreements

Some brief pre-reading materials may be distributed to participants to review prior to their workshop attendance for discussion during the workshop.
